Gikuyu is Kenya's most widely spoken first language, with over eight million native speakers in the central highlands surrounding Mount Kenya.

Regional dialects — between Nyeri, Murang'a, Kiambu, and Kirinyaga — show notable phonological variation in vowel length and tone. The language has a standardised orthography.
